‘Guadiana’ by Maria Ramos & ‘Fantaisie sur un thème original’ by Jules Demersseman.
‘Guadiana’ is a piece for soprano saxophone and ‘taconeo’ based in folklore rhythms from Andalucía. With its flamenco spirit, this piece is inspired by the river Guadiana which runs trough the south of Spain and Portugal. Maybe it is out of nostalgia but since I am living in the Netherlands, my interest and love to flamenco music and culture has increased very much and while playing this piece I feel closer to my home country.
When I found ‘Guadiana’, composed by a Spanish former student for the same saxophone class where I am studying now, I could not be more motivated about making my own version of it and to present it to this competition.
The ‘Fantaisie sur un thème original’ by Jules Demersseman is a piece that has always accompanied me. I played it for the first time when I was a child and my teacher, Arno Bornkamp, suggested me to go through it again. I would not have imagined how many memories it brought to me and how much I enjoyed the process of revisiting this music again with my dear friend Joaquín.
I am very thankful to share this special program and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
During the performance of the second piece I am playing along with the pianist Jose Joaquín Parejo Bullón.
